With Sudhan – the master pencil artist!

I had a great opportunity to meet Sudhan – the man behind the daily dose of Periyava pencil art. Camera-shy, soft-spoken and humble personality is Sudhan. As I understand, he is normally very quiet but chose to talk to me for few hours.
Sudhan is doing a selfless job of drawing. To him, these drawings are pujas. He is doing work until midnight and he draws these at 3 AM etc. When devotees contact him, he spends his money to frame the picture and gives them so that they do not roll these drawings and keep it somewhere. He wants ummachi thatha picture to be worshipped. For that he had traveled to far away places to deliver these photos. I told him not to spend his money on this.
All he knows is Periyava – he did not learn Vedam etc. So he chose to do this daily painting of Periyava as his way of concentrating on Him. As we all know with His blessings, his drawings in his initial days were lot more simple and now he is focusing on lot more details and shading work etc, which are starting to give amazing look.
Great devotee, great blessings…We pray Mahaperiyava to bless him with health, wealth and more strength to draw!
Hara Hara Sankara Jaya Jaya Sankara!
Periyava has been interacting with him through dreams. He narrated two incidents

When Sudhan woke up, the room was filled with viboothi smell.
Incident #2
One day he went to adishtanam to keep a new drawing at the feet of Periyava and few people around there reached out to him to look at the photos etc. While he was starting to do his pradakshanam, a small vidyarthi or a kid came running towards him and asked if he could do a drawing for him. Sudhan apparently nodded his head and kept moving. Subsequently, he forgot this whole thing. On that night or so, Mahaperiyava came in his dream and asked “Why didn’t you give that kid a drawing?”. Sudhan apologized to Him that he forgot. He pointed a specific photo and said “Give this to that kid”. Immediately he woke up and started drawing that image and called that kid, who happened to be living very close to Sudhan and gave it to him. His family members were so excited about Periyava’s anugrahams to their family.
Sudhan does not need any more approvals. He is truly blessed. He was kind enough to present me with two of his drawings. Out of that one photo was chosen by Mahaperiyava Himself. I felt blessed to receive this from Sudhan. Although he is camera-shy, I requested a photo with him so that I could say “I know Sudhan!”.
Here it is: (sitting outside of the Ayodhya mandapam).

  4. MurPriya :

It is a wonder how so many people get connected via the Mukkur - Mahaperiyavaa arc - more than you can imagine ! I am not sure if you have read about the Mukkur Swamy - Mahaperiyava episode connecting MGR. It was written by Indira Parthasarathy in his serial - Chandrasekharam (in Deepam magazine).

  5. It is collected in the series Chandrasekaram by Indira Parthasarathy - the book should be available with Kalki Publications - let me enquire them. IP puts it in a masterful way but here is a short recount:

Legend has it that MGR was the first leader of the Dravidian Movement to visit Paramacharya with Manian of Idhayam Pesugirathu. The Paramacharya blessed him abundantly and told him to rule for the sake of people. Later when MGR won his first full elections Paramacharya asked his anukkath thondargal at Kanchi Mutt to dial one Mr. Meenakshisundaram who was a devotee of Kanchi Mutt, living right in the Venkatesan Street lane. The call connected to none other than Sri Mukkur Swamy, whom the Paramacharya asked to go to Ramavaram gardens and bless MGR with Vedha Ganam.

So off went Sri Mukkur Swamy in Nrusimha vegam to the gate of MGR's residence to chant ganam and bless the the newly elected CM who returned fresh from a massive thanksgiving at mount road which is now historic for it's record crowd.

The essence of this all is that "It is indeed Sri Eashwaran and Sri Nrusimhan who decide everything .." :-) Rest is all time-pass !!

Note: I covered the gist of the incident but it is nowhere near that of Sri Indira Parthasarathy's coverage - the writer himself is a great devotee of both the doyens - the living avatArs.

    1. Thank you so much. Wonderful to read about connections between Sri Mukkur Swamigal & Sri Maha Periyava. One Nrusimha Swaroopam, another Siva Swaroopam.
