ANTARVEDI - Sri Lakhmi Narasimhar Temple

Sri Mukkur Lakshmi Narasimha chariyar Swamigal has done Many Sri Narasimha Maha Mantra Yagnams in this Sri Lakhmi Narasimha Temple - AntharVedi.

ANTARVEDI : Sthala Puranam

It is said that the great saint Vashishta took one rivulet of Godavari river and merged the same in the Bay of Bengal. The delta region formed is known as Antarvedi; the rivulet as Vashishta Godavari.

In Kruta Yuga, Rakthalochana, son of Hiranyaksha made penance and got a boon from Lord Shiva and became a great tyrant; troubling and killing the sons of Vashishta Maharshi .In response to the prayer of Vashishta, Narahari came to their rescue and waged a war with Rakthalochana. But during the war, a drop of blood oozing from the body of Rakthalochana, when falling to Earth, was resulting in the raising of one more Rakthalochana of the same bravery which was the effect of the boon derived by Rakthalochana from Lord Shiva. So, with the objective of stopping the fall of blood on the Earth, Narahari requested the help of the demon's sister Ashwaroodamba (Gurralakka). She appeared and spread her large tongue in between the body of Raktha;lochana and the Earth, so as to prevent the drops of blood from falling to Earth and growing into more and more Rakthalochanas. Thus she helped Narahari to kill the tyrant Rakthalochana. Ashwaroodamba jerked her blood filled tongue into 'Vishishta Godavari' which flowed into the sea. The rivulet is called 'Rakthakulya'which is still a tributary of river Godavari. The place where the wheel of Narahari was washed is called 'Chakra Theertham'.

It is said that Lord Lakshmi Narasimha appeared in an idol form and the idol was kept there by Vashishta. Vashishta left the place before the onset of Kaliyuga. Without further patronisation, the temple came to ruin.

Kesavadas, belonging to 'Yadava' caste dug open the idol of Lord Narasimha and put on a small house with wooden planks. From that day onwards, poojas were offered daily and Kesavadas gave away lands as donation for the uplift of the temple and restart of the festivities.

The village Antarvedi continued to remain in the pilgrims' devotion even after Kesavadas.
One day, a fisherman brought a' Kurmaavatara' of Lord from the rivulet Rakthakulya and it was also set with Lord Sri Lakshmi Narasimha and daily poojas began to be offered to both idols.

Later several donors came forward to put on a good temple with quality bricks and wood. The temple is now apparent to public as if constructed very recently, although the temple was constructed in 1822.

Antarvedi is 25 km. away from Razole.lt can be approached either from Razole or from Narasapur by crossing the river Godavari. Since the temple is located away from the town, facilities for overnight stay are not available. Pilgrims desirous of night halt at the temple premises have to take the trouble of carrying their requirements from the nearest town.

Antarvedi is a small village in East Godavari district, situated 13 km. away from Narsapur in the delta region where the tributary Vashishta Godavari merges in the Bay of Bengal. The village is a small one, but became popular due to the presence of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swami Temple. The place is known as Dakshina Kasi.
