Shrimad akalanka paripurna shashikoöi
Shridhara manohara saöapaöakanta /
palaya kupalaya bhavambudhi nimagnam
daityavarakala narasimha narasimha //

O Lord Nrisimha, O Lord Nrisimha, You are the husband of Shri, the goddess of fortune. You are the death of the greatest demon, Hiranyakashipu. I am sinking into the ocean of birth and death, O Kripalaya, the treasure house of mercy, please protect me.

TEXT 2
pada kamalavanata pataki jananam
pataka davanala patatri varaketo /
bhavana parayana bhavarti haraya mam
pahi kripayaiva narasimha narasimha //

O Lord Nrisimha, You are the forest fire of sins of the sinful people who bow down to Your lotus feet. You are known as Garuda-dvaja, whose chariot flag is adorned by Garuda. O Lord Nrisimha, You are the cause of creation and the best shelter. Please protect me and bestow Your mercy upon me which alone can remove the distress of birth and death.

tunga nakha-pankti-dalitasuravarasrik
panka nava kunkuma vipankila mahorah /
pandita nidhana kamlalaya namaste
pankaja nishnëa narasimha narasimha //

O Lord Nrisimha, Your raised nails have ripped apart the great demon, Hiraëyakashipu. The blood that squirted out made Your chest wet and made it look like that fresh kumkum was applied on You. O Lord Nrisimha, You are the shelter of the best persons including Kamala, the goddess of fortune. You always dwell in Your abode which resembles a lotus flower. I offer my obeisances unto You.

maulishu vibhushaëam iva maravaraëam
yogihridayeshu ca shirassu nigamanam /
rajad aravinda ruciram padayugam te
dehi mama murdhni narasimha narasimha //


O Lord Nrisimha, O Lord Nrisimha, please keep Your illuminating lotus feet on my head which are placed as ornaments on the helmets of the demigods, in the hearts of the yogis and on the nigamas, the Vedic scriptures.

varija vilocana mad antima dashayam
klesha vivashikrita samasta karaëayam /
ehi ramaya saha sharaëya vihaganam
natham adhiruhya narasimha narasimha //

O Lord Nrisimha, O Lord Nrisimha, O lotus eyed one, please give me Your audience along with Rama, Your consort riding on the back of Garuda, the king of birds, when all my senses will be suffering in distress and I will be in my last difficulty at the time of giving up my body.

haöaka kiriöavara hara vanamala
tararashana makara kuëdala maëindraih /
bhushitam-ashesha-nilayam tava vapurme
cotasi cakastu narasimha narasimha //

O Lord Nrisimha, O Lord Nrisimha, Your transcendental body, which is the ultimate shelter of everything, is decorated with a beautiful golden crown, a forest garland, shark like earrings, various excellent jewels and an out projecting wide tongue. Let this form illuminate my mind.

indu ravi pavaka vilocana ramayah
mandira mahabhuja lasadvara rathanga /
sundara ciraya ramatam tvayi mano me
nandita suresha narasimha narasimha //

O Lord Nrisimha, O beautiful One, let my mind always be engaged in enjoying Your form. The sun, the moon and the fire are Your eyes and Your strong arm is beautified by a huge wheel. O Lord Nrisimha, You are the only shelter of goddess Rama(Lakshmi) and You are honored even by Lord Indra.

madhava mukunda madhusudana murare
vamana nrisimha sharaëam bhava natanam /
kamada ghriëin nikhila karaëa nayeyam
kalam amaresha narasimha narasimha //

O Lord Nrisimha, O Mukunda, Madhusudana, Murari, Vamana, You are the shelter of the surrendered souls. O Lord of the demigods, cause of all causes, please do not neglect me. Kindly fulfill my desire of passing my whole life chanting Your holy names.

ashöakam idam sakala pataka bhayaghnam
kamadam ashesha duritamaya ripughnam /
yah paöhati santatam ashesha nilayam te
gacchati padam sa narasimha narasimha //

O Lord Nrisimha, one who reads these eight prayers daily becomes free from all the fear of sinful reactions. All his desires become fulfilled, kills all his enemies and destroys al kinds of diseases. He will attain the abode of Lord Nrisimha, the Lord reclining on shesha

I bow down before Lord Nrisimha, who is splendid like thousands of rising suns, whose eyes are filled with anger, whose roar is like the roaring of the ocean at the time of the universe's destruction, whose face is like the blazing fires at the end of the kalpa, whose limbs are sprinkled with blood from the broken chest of Indra's enemy, and who removes the fears of His surrendered devotees.

sarasa—passionate; rabhasa—violent; pada—feet; apata—falling; bhara—burden; abhirava—by the sound; pracakita—frightened; cala—going; sapta-dvandva-loka-stutah—to the fourteen worlds; tvam—You; ripu—enemy's; rudhira—blood; nishekeëa—by the shower; eva—indeed; shoëa—red; anghri—feet; shalin—possessing.


O Lord the sounds of whose passionate footsteps make the demons flee to the fourteen worlds, O Lord whose feet are reddened by the shower of Your enemy's blood, O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

tava ghana-ghana-ghosho ghoram aghraya jangha-
parigham alaghum uru-vyaja-tejo-girim ca
ghana-vighatitam agad daitya-janghalasangho
daha daha narasimhasahya-virahitam me


tava—Your; ghana-ghana-ghoshah—thunder of many clouds; ghoram—horrible; aghraya—smelling; jangha—legs; parigham—iron rod; alaghum—thick; uru—thighs; vyaja—seeming; tejah—of light; girim—mountain; ca—also; ghana-vighaöitam—to the sky; agat—far away; daitya-janghala-sagdhah—the multitude of fleeing demons.


O Lord, when they perceive the slightest scent of the iron mace that is Your legs or the mountain of light that is Your thighs, the demons, screaming like thunder, flee into the sky. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

kaöaki—thighs; kaöaka—mountain; rajad-shining; hataka—golden; agrya-sthala—peak; abha—splendor; prakaöa—manifested; paöa—garments; taöit—lightning bolt; te—of You; sat-kaöi-stha—styaing on the hips; ati-paövi—very expert; kaöuka-kaöuka—hardest of the hard; dushöa—of the demons; aöopa—bewildered; drishöi—eyes; pramushöau—robbing.


O Lord, the golden effulgence of the mountain peak that is Your hips, a mountain peak clothed in the lightning flashes of Your yellow garments, has robbed the harsh and angry demons �of their eyes. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

shikhari-shikhara-raktair akta-sandoha-deha
su-balibha-shubha-kukshe bhadra-gambhira-nabhe
daha daha narasimhasahya-virahitam me

prakhara—sharp; nakhara—claws; vajra—thunderbolt; utkhata—ripped apart; ruksha—hard; ari—of theenemy; vakshah—the chest; shikhari-shikhara—mountain peak; raktaih—with blood; akta—anointed; sandoha-deha—torso; su-balibha—with three folds of skin; shubha—glorious; kukshe—belly; bhadra—graceful; gambhira—deep; nabhe—navel.


O Lord, Your abdomen, with its handsome lines of tri-bali and its deep and graceful navel, is now anointed with blood from the mountain peak of Your enemy's hard chest, now ripped apart by Your sharp nails. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

sphurayati—manifests; tava—Your; sakshat—directly; sa—that; eva—indeed; nakshatra-mala—stars; kshapita—destroyed; ditija—demon's; vakshah—chest; vyapta—maniefsted; nakshatra-margam—the pathway of the stars (the sky); ari—cakra; dara—and conchshell; dhara—holding; janu—to the knees; asakta—reaching; hasta-dvaya—hands; ahah—Oh!

O Lord who hold the disc and conchshell, O Lord whose hands reach to Your knees, O Lord who made a garland of stars shine in the sky of the defeated demon's chest. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

kaöu—sharp; vikaöa—expanded; saöa—mane; augha—flood; udghaööanat—from the attack; bhrashöa—fallen; bhuyah—many; ghana—-paöala—multitudes of clouds; vishala—great; akasha—sky; labdha—obtained; avakasham—opportunity; kara—of the hands; parigha—the iron maces; vimarda-prodyamam—struck by the blows; dhyayatah—meditating; te—they.


O Lord whose great mane made many clouds fall from the sky, O Lord whose hands are formidable iron maces, I meditate on You. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

haöha—violent; luöhat—moving; alaghishöha—thick; utkaëöha—neck; dashöa—bitten; oshöha—lips; vidyut—lightning; saöa—mane; shaöha—of the demon; kaöhina—hard; urah-piöha—chest; bhit—breaking; sushöhu—greatly; nishöham—faith; paöati—recites; tu—indeed; tava—of You; kaëöha—on the neck; adhishöha—placed; ghora—horrible; antra—of entrails; mala—garland.


O Lord, Your thick neck is turned to Your vicious enemy. You bite Your lips in anger. Your mane is like lightning. You eagerly rip apart the demon's chest. The horrible necklace of entrails around Your neck recites eloquent prayers glorifying You. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

huta-vaha-bahu-heti-hreshitananta-heti

hata—defeated; bahu—many; mihira—suns; abha—splendor; asahya—unbearable; samhara—destruction; ramhah—violence; huta—offered; vaha—fire; bahu—many; heti—flames; hreshita—roars; ananta—limitless; heti—splendor; ahita—to the enemies; vihita—given; moham—bewilderment; samvahan—carrying; saimham—of a lion; asyam—the face.


O Lord whose invincible violent power is more brilliant than a host of suns, O Lord whose roaring burns greater than a host of fires, O Lord whose lion face bewilders Your enemies, O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

daddhad ati-kau-damstre bhishanojjihva-vaktram

guru—great; guru—greatest; giri—mountain; rajat—shining; kandara—cave; antah—within; gate—gone; va—or; dinamaëi-maëi—of suryakanta jewels; shringe—on the summit; va—or; anta—at the end of the cosmos; vahni—fire; pradipte—shining; dadhat—manifesting; ati—very; kaöu—sharp; damshöre—teeth; bhishaëa—frightening; ujjihva—with tongue; vaktre—mouth.


 Lord, with its very sharp teeth and fearful tongue, Your gaping mouth is like the greatest of splendid mountain caves, or like a mountain peak of suryakanta jewels, or like the blazing fire that destroys the universe. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

vividha-vibudha-dhi-sraddhapitendrari-nasham

adharita—entered; vibudha—of the demiogds; abdhi—the ocean; dhyana—of meditation; dhairyam—steadiness; vididhyat—shining; vividha—various; vibudha—of the demigods; dhi—intelligence; sraddhapita—concluded; indra—of Indra; ari—of the enemies; nasham—destruction; vidadhat—placing; ati—very; kaöaaha—universe; udghaööana—shaking; iddha—expanded; aööa—raised; hasam—laughter.


O Lord, Your loud and shrill laughter shakes the universe and agitates the peaceful ocean of the demigods' meditations. The demigods trust that this laughter means the death of Indra's enemies. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

tri—three; bhuvana—worlds; triëa—a blade of grass; matra—only; traëa—protection; trishëam—thirst; tu—indeed; netra—eyes; trayam—three; ati—very; laghita—light; arcih—of light; vishöapa—places; avishöa—entered; padam—parts; navatara—new; ravi—sun; tamram—red; dharayan—manifesting; ruksha—angry; viksham—glance.


O Lord, red like the rising sun, Your three angry eyes make all brilliant things in this world seem dim by comparison. Those eyes thirst to protect the blade of straw that is the three worlds. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

bhramat—illusions; abhibhava—defeat; bhu—the world; bhrit—maintaining; bhuri—great; bhu—of the earth; bhara—burden; sat—the saintly devotees; bhit—of they who harm; bhit—destruction; abhinava—new; vida-bhru-vibhrama—moving of the eyebrows; adabhra—great; shubhra—splendor; ribhu—of the demigods; bhava—of continued material existence; bhaya—fear; bhettah—breaking; bhasi—You shine; bhah—Oh; bhah—Oh; vibhabhih—with splendors.




O Lord, the knitting of Your eyebrows is glorious without limit. Those eternally new movements defeat illusions, maintain the worlds, remove the burden of the worlds, and kill they who would harm Your devotees. O Lord who break apart the demigods' fears that they will remain trapped in this world of birth and death, You shine with great splendor. shravaëa—ears; khacita—decorated; cancat—moving; kuëdala—earrings; uccaëda—fearsome; gaëda—cheeks; bhru—eyebrows; kuöi—movements; kaöu—sharp; lalaöa—forehead; shreshöha—best; nasa—nose; aruëa—red; oshöha—lips; varada—O giver of boons; su-rada—beautiful teeth; rajat—glistening; kesara—mane; utsarita—driven away; are—enemies.


O Lord whose fearsome cheeks are decorated with swinging earrings, O Lord whose forehead is ferocious with moving eyebrows, O Lord whose nose is the most graceful, whose lips are red, whose teeth are splendid, and whose mane glistens wonderfully, O Lord who make Your enemies flee in all directions, O giver of boons, O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

kaci-kaca-kacat—on the top of Your mane; rajat—shining; ratna—jewel; koöira—crown; shalin—possessing; gala—on the neck; gata—gone; galad-usra—effulgent; udara—great; ratna—jewel; angada—with armlets; adhya—opulent; kanaka—jewel; kaöaka—bracelet; kanci—belt; shinjini—anklets; mudrika—finger rings; van—possessing.


O Lord wearing a splendid jewel crown in Your mane, O Lord glorious with a splendid jewel necklace, and with armlets, golden bracelets, belt, anklets, and finger rings, O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

musalam api karabhyam ankusham pasha-varyam
kara-yugala-dhritantra-srag vibhinnari-vaksho
daha daha narasimhasahya-virahitam me


ari—cakra; daram—conchshell; asi—sword; kheöau—shield; baëa—arrow; cape—bow; gadam—club; san—being; musalam—mace; api—also; karabhyam—with two hands; ankusham—goad; pasha-varyam—noose; kara-yugala—two hands; dhrita—held; antra—of intestines; srak—garland; vibhinna—broken; ari—enemy's; vakshah—chest.


O Lord who in Your many hands hold a disc, conchshell, sword, shield, bow, arrow, club, mace, noose, a hook held with two hands, and a garland of intestines held in two hands, O Lord who tore apart Your enemy's chest, O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

vidhi—Brahma; bhava—Shiva; vibudhesha—and Indra; bhramaka—bewildering; agni-sphulinga—sparks; prasavi—flying; vikaöa—great; damshöra—teeth; ujjihva—tongue; vaktra—mouth; tri-netra—three eyes; kala—grant; kala—grant; kala—grant; kamam—desire; pahi—please protect; mam—me; te—to You; su-bhaktam—sincerely devoted.




O Lord, the sparks flying from Your great teeth, tongue, face, and three eyes bewilder Brahma, Shiva, and Indra. O Lord, please, please, please fulfill my desire. Please protect me, for I am sincerely devoted to You. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

disha disha vidisham me shashvatim deva drishtim
jaya jaya jaya-murte 'narta jetavya-paksham

kuru—please do; kuru—do; karuëam—mercy; tam—that; sankuram—great; daitya—of a demon; pote—to the small sonm; disha—show; disha—show; vidisham—the directions; me—of me; shashvatim—always; deva—O Lord; drishöim—glance; jaya—defeat; jaya—defeat; jaya-murte—O form of victory; anarta—free fom all sufferings; jetavya—to be defeated; paksham—the group.




O Lord, as You were merciful to Prahlada, please be merciful, please be merciful to me. O Lord, please glance, please always glance in my direction. O form of victory, O Lord free from all sufferings, please defeat, please defeat the demons. O invincible, all powerful Lord Nrisimha, please burn, burn into ashes my enemies and my sins.

tanur iva parishanta malini sabhito 'lam
tad-akhila-gurum agrya-shrida-rupa lasadbhih
su-niyama-naya-krityaih sad-guëair nitya-yukta


stutih—prayer; iyam—this; ahita—what is inauspicious; ghni—destroying; sevita—served; narasimhi—to Lord Nrisimha; tanuh—form; iva—like; parishanta—peaceful; malini—in the meter malini; sa—that; abhitah—completely; alam—greatly; tad-akhila-gurum—the best of all; agrya—exalted; shrida-rupa—glorious; lasadbhih—shining; su-niyama-naya-krityaih—with beautiful feet; sad-guëaih—glorious; nitya—always; yukta—endowed.
This glorious prayer in the shanta-rasa, is like the form of Lord Nrisimha Himself. It is beautifully written with graceful long and short syllables in the meter malini.
Note: The meter malini is this: uuuuuu---u--u--.

likuca—in the family of Trivikrama Paëdita; tilaka—tilaka marking; sunuh—son; sat—of the devotees; hita—welfare; artha—for the sake; anusari—following; narahari—to Lord Nrisimha; nutim—prayer; etam—this; shatru—of enemies; samhara—destruction; hetum—for the purpose; akrita—wrote; sakala—all; papa—sins; dhvamsinim—destroying; yah—a person who; paöhet—recites; tam—this; vrajati—goes; nriharilokam—to the planet of Lord Nrisimha; kama-lobhady-asaktah—free from lust, greed, and other vices.


Wishing the welfare of the Lord's devotees, Narayaëa Paëdita, who is the tilaka marking in the family of Trivikrama Paëdita, has written these prayers glorifying Lord Nrisimha, prayers that vanquish enemies and destroy all sins. A person free from lust, greed, and other vices who recites this prayer goes to the spiritual realm of Lord Nrisimha.

Shri Narasimha Nakha Stuti was written by Shripada Madhvacarya as an introduction to Shri Vayu Stuti which was written by Shri Pandit Trivikramacarya, a disciple of Madhvacarya. Up to the present time Vayu Stuti is one of the main stutis of those following in the line of Shrila Madhvacarya. It is chanted daily as a parayana. It was very much to the liking of Madhvacarya who therefore wrote this short stuti as an introduction.


pantvasman puruhutavairi balavanmatanga madyadghata
kumbhoccadri vipatanadhi kapatu pratyekavajrayitah /
Shrimat kanthiravasya pratatasunakhara daritaratidura
pradhvasta dhvatashanta pravitata manasa bhavita nakivrinda //

May the wide spread and auspicious nails of the lion-faced Lord, Narasimha who is in the company of His consort Lakshmi protect us. His nails are like thunderbolts and are highly skilled in tearing asunder the lofty mountain like heads of the herds of strong and intoxicated elephants in the forms of demons, the foes of Indra.


lakshmikanta samantato vikalayan naiveshitus te saman
pashyamyuttama vastu duratarato pastam rasoyo stumah /
yadrosotkara dakshanetra kutila prantotthitogni sphurat
khadyotopamavisphylinya bhasita brahmeshushakrot karah //

O consort of Lakshmi ! Although I've an all around study of the shastras I don't find anything equal to You, my dear master. There is nothing superior to You. Brahma, shiva, Indra and their hosts are reduced to ashes by the sparks of fire resembling sparkling glowworms issuing from the curved edge of Your right eye filled with masses of wrath.
